Umina Beach, NSW 2257
The most vibrant and populated suburb on the Central Coast, Umina Beach is a highly coveted location, popular with surfers for its excellent surfing conditions.
The suburb was first established as a holiday resort town in 1917 connecting to Woy Woy Train Station via a motor service. Today, it still provides a sense of peace and tranquility which its residents adore. In fact, the name Umina derives from an aboriginal word meaning 'place of rest'.
Umina's long sandy beach is one of the Central Coast's most prized beaches. Offering broad appeal to beachgoers, it's perfect for families and absolutely ideal for swimming and surfing.
The suburb borders Brisbane Waters National Park where you can experience around 12,000 hectares of spectacular rugged sandstone country, including Aboriginal engravings, bushwalking tracks, native flora and wildlife. Nearby, the Mt. Ettalong Lookout offers spectacular panoramic views of Umina and Ettalong, with outlooks stretching south across Broken Bay down to Palm Beach.
The town centre features an array of shops and amenities, including Woolworths, Coles, Bunnings Hardware, Aldi Supermarkets and McDonald's. A number of local shops, takeaway restaurants and cafes line the streets, with the multi award-winning Bremen Patisserie on West Street being a very popular choice. The Margarita Daze bar is a great spot to unwind with a cocktail or glass of wine while gazing over the sparkling waters, and the area also offers a selection of cafes, including The Cove at Umina Beach.
Umina Beach is serviced by two schools, Umina Public School and the Umina campus of Brisbane Water Secondary College. Umina Oval at the southern end of Melbourne Avenue is the home ground for team sports including soccer, rugby league, cricket and tennis, making it a popular social scene within the community.
Frequent bus services take you from Umina Beach to Gosford and Woy Woy Station, where the direct train to the city takes just 1 hour and 15 minutes. The Ettalong Wharf is close by, with ferries connecting to both Palm Beach and Wagstaffe Wharf.
